Helix aspersa, California. This is one of the two main species of snails eaten by the French - "escargots." A species of Eastern Europe, it has been introduced by human commerce to many places in the world. It is a serious pest in the western and southwestern United States, and in Australia (where it is known as the pestiferous "garden snail").
